FRANCONIA, N.H. – The University of Vermont ski team took second place after the first day of the UNH Carnival on Friday. The Catamounts posted 421 event points and trail Dartmouth by 34 points for the top spot on the team leaderboard.

The green and gold had eight different skiers record a top-10 finish in Friday's races.
Alayna Sonnesyn had a solid run in the women's 5K classic sprint with a second-place finish. Sonnesyn completed the race at 14:34.4 and fellow Catamount
Jana Klaiber placed seventh overall at :15:11.7.
Iris Pessey followed in 15th place at 15:38.1 and
Margie Freed came in 18th place with a time of 15:42.0.
MacKenzie Rizio added a 20th-place finish for the Cats at 15:43.2.
Paula Moltzan contributed a second-place finish for UVM in the women's giant slalom. The freshman closed out the race with a combined time of 2:19.17 and finished less than half-of-a-second away from Dartmouth's Foreste Peterson in first place.
Laurence St. Germain came in sixth place in her first race of the 2017 season with a total time of 2:21.70.
Mille Graesdal was the third UVM skier to claim a top-10 finish in the race. Graesdal posted a ninth-place finish with an overall time of 2:22.45.
Ian Moore earned a third-place finish out of 90 qualified racers in the men's 10K classic sprint race. Moore crossed the line at 26:08.3.
Cully Brown grabbed a top-10 finish in 10th place with a time of 26:43.6.
Henry Harmeyer took 24th overall at :27:33.4.
In the men's giant slalom,
Max Roeisland placed third overall out of 43 qualified racers with a combined time of 2:16.85.
Gaby Coulet came in 15th place with a total time of 2:18.98 and Moore was right behind him in 16th place at 2:19.24 in a double-duty effort.
Griffin Brown grabbed a top-20 finish in 19th place at 2:20.15.
Vermont closes out the UNH Carnival on Saturday morning (Jan. 28). Alpine races start at 9:00 a.m. with the first run of the men's slalom. Nordic races begin with the men's 20K mass start freestyle at 10 a.m.
