Ben Ogden won the men's classic sprint and
Marina Vilanova won the women's giant slalom Friday afternoon on the opening day of the UVM Carnival held in Craftsbury and Stowe. After the first day of competition Vermont is in first place with 447 points, four ahead of second-place Dartmouth.

Vilanova won her second straight GS title for the Catamounts leading the charge on a great day for the women's alpine squad. Vilanova had the fastest first run time in the field at 1:07.5. Her combined time of 2:16.1 was three-tenths of a second faster than Dartmouth's Patricia Mangan.
Josefine Selvaag placed fourth overall for UVM with a combined time of 2:17.0.
Rachael DesRochers finished sixth with a combined time of 2:18.8. On their home hill the Catamounts earned an EISA-best 128 points in the giant slalom.
Ogden had the top-time in the qualifying heat Friday morning on the 1.5k loop at the Craftsbury Outdoor Center. His time of 3:17.58 was .62 seconds ahead of anyone in the field. Ogden was joined by
Bill Harmeyer,
Karl Schulz,
Greg Burt,
Ian Moore and
Conor Munns in the quarterfinals. Ogden was Vermont's sole semifinalist in the expanded field for the Lost Nation Cup, he earned 50 team points as the top collegiate finisher. Harmeyer finished third and Schulz seventh amongst the EISA competitors. The men's squad picked up 129 points, finishing 35 points ahead of anyone else in the field.
On the women's side freshman
Waverly Gebhardt was the top-scorer, earning 35 points with a seventh-place finish. It was her first top-ten performance in just her third career EISA start. She was joined by
Lina Sutro,
Anna Bizyukova,
Margie Freed, and
Phoebe Sweet in the quarterfinals. Freed finished 11th and Sutro finished 13th to bring Vermont's total to 93 team points.
For the third straight race
Joachim Jagge Lindstol was the top finisher for the men's alpine squad. He placed fifth overall with a combined run time of 2:13.21 After a DNF last weekend
Mathias Tefre placed 11th in his second collegiate giant slalom with a mark of 2:14.61.
David Frisk was the Catamounts final scorer, placing 15th with a two-run time of 2:15.67.
The 2020 UVM Carnival will conclude tomorrow in central Vermont. The men's and women's slalom will take place at Mt. Mansfield Ski Club and Academy starting at 9 a.m. At the Craftsbury Outdoor Center the men and women will compete in the 5k/10k Skate.
