SKIING NOTEBOOK
A contingent of 12 Vermont student-athletes will compete this week for the Catamounts at the 2021 NCAA Skiing Championships hosted by UNH. 146 of the best skiers from 17 different schools will compete over the next four days to be crowned the 2021 NCAA National Champion. Nordic races will be held at the Jackson Nordic Center while alpine action will be at Cannon Mountain.

HOW THE SCORING WORKS
The NCAA Skiing Championships uses a 40-point system that was instituted in 2014. Scoring is weighted towards the top-seven finishers. Points are awarded on a 40-37-34-31-29-27-25-23-22-21-20-19-18-17-16-15-14-13-12-11-10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis for the top-30 finishers.

UVM NCAA HISTORY
Vermont has won six NCAA Championships – 1980, 1989, 1990, 1992, 1994, 2012, in program history. 388 Catamounts have been named All-Americans and 68 Catamounts have won an individual national title. Last year in Bozeman Montana
Ben Ogden was the National Champion in the 10k Freestyle on the final day of competition before the NCAA Championship was shutdown due to COVID-19.

15 CATAMOUNTS NAMED TO USCSCA ALL-ACADEMIC SKI TEAM
On Tuesday 15 Catamounts were among the record 428 student-athletes honored by the United States Collegiate Ski Coaches Association as members of the All-Academic Ski Team. To qualify, a student-athlete must maintain a 3.5 cumulative grade point average. In 2021 because membership in the three conferences spans all divisions in the NCAA and not all institutions competed in winter sports due to the pandemic, the normal requirement of participation in one of three NCAA Regional competitions was waived. Â

LAST TIME IN THE GRANITE STATE
UNH was the host of the NCAA Skiing Championships at Cannon Mountain and the Jackson Nordic Center in 2017 as well. The Catamounts best day in 2017 came in the slalom. Then first-year
Paula Moltzan won the national championship in the slalom and
Will St. Germain finished second overall in the men's race.
Alayna Sonnesyn also finished as the runner up in the 15k freestyle. UVM finished fifth in the overall standings with 355 points.
