COACH'S QUOTE
"Our defensive efforts in the beginning of this game in front of goal were not at the level we expect," Head Coach
Kristi Huizenga said. "We will address that this week in training and respond appropriately as we head into a big two-game week. There was a great crowd here today at Virtue Field and we appreciate everyone who came out to support us."
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Stony Brook opened the scoring in the eighth minute. From the end line Chelsie DePonte fired a through ball into the box that Alicia D'Aoust settled down in front to a wide open Francese. Alone with Vermont's Lydia Kessel she fired a shot bar down for her first of the afternoon.
- Just 2:23 later Francese once again worked with D'Aoust to double their advantage. Cutting down the left side of the pitch D'Aoust played a perfect ball into Francese. Francese fought through a Vermont defender and placed a shot into the far corner to make it 2-0 just 10:18 into the contest.
- Seconds after the Stony Brook tally UVM's Jill Brody had an excellent opportunity to cut the deficit in half. With her pace, she blew by a Stony Brook defender and from a tough angle she got a shot on net that dribbled along the line but wouldn't fall for Vermont.
- In the 21st minute UVM had another great chance to get back into the game. Stony Brook's Emerson Burke made a diving save just pushing a Bailey Ayer shot past the post.
- Francese completed her hat trick in the 74th minute. On a great individual run she was given a little space and took advantage leaving no doubt and finishing to the far post again.
- With 6:54 left in regulation Burke made another excellent save to preserve her shutout this time robbing Alexa Mihale with a diving stop.
