Men’s Hockey Takes Unbeaten Streak on the Road to #17 UMass Lowell

MEN'S HOCKEY NOTEBOOK
Riding a three-game unbeaten streak the Catamounts continue the 2022-23 regular season this weekend as they return to Hockey East action heading to the Tsongas Center to face No. 17 UMass Lowell. Puck drop is slated for 7:15 p.m. on Friday and 6 p.m. on Saturday. The voice of the Catamounts, Adam LaFleur, will broadcast the action live on WVMT (FM 96.3 / AM 620) and the Varsity Network App, which you can download here. CATAMOUNTS UNBEATEN IN THREE
With the Catamounts 6-0 win over Holy Cross, followed by a 2-1 win and 1-1 tie at Colgate UVM is in the midst of its second three-game unbeaten streak under Head Coach Todd Woodcroft. UVM has scored first in each game in the streak, the Catamounts are 2-1-1 this season when scoring first and 0-3-0 when their opponent scores first.
 
CARRIERE NAMED HOCKEY EAST GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK
After stellar weekend for the Catamounts at Colgate where junior netminder Gabe Carriere made 76 saves he was named the Stop It Goaltending Hockey East Goaltender of the Week. In his last four games Carriere has posted at .971 save percentage.
 
BUYALSKY NETS FIRST CAREER GOAL
Colorado Avalanche third round draft pick Andrei Buyalsky netted his first career collegiate goal Friday night at Colgate. Buyalsky leads the Catamounts this season with 21 shots.
 
CAPTAIN LEADING THE WAY WITH HELPERS
Jacques Bouquot, the 63rd captain in program history, is leading Vermont in scoring early this season. He has five points all of them helpers for the Catamounts. His five assists are tied for 10th most in Hockey East this season.
 
SCOUTING THE RIVER HAWKS
UMass Lowell is 5-3-0 this season including a 2-1-0 mark in league play. The River Hawks currently sit in fourth place in Hockey East with seven points. Last weekend they earned a four-point weekend in a home-and-home set with Boston University. The River Hawks topped the Terriers 2-1 at home last Friday before falling in overtime 2-1 at BU Saturday.
 
Senior forwards Carl Berglund (4 Gl, 4 Ast) and Brian Chambers (2 Gl, 2 Ast) are tied for the team lead with eight points this season. 12 UMass Lowell skaters have at least two points this season. First year forward Scout Truman was named Hockey East Co-Rookie of the Week after scoring both goals for UMass Lowell in its 2-1 win over Boston University.
  
SERIES HISTORY
The Catamounts are 16-37-8 all-time against the River Hawks and 6-17-3 on the road facing UML. The River Hawks are 9-0-1 in the last 10 meetings with the Catamounts, four of those UML wins were one-goal games. Vermont's last win in the series came on January 20, 2018 in a 6-3 UVM triumph at Gutterson Fieldhouse. The Catamounts last win at the Tsongas Center was Game 2 of the Hockey East Quarterfinals on March 15, 2014. UVM triumphed 3-2 in overtime with a game-winning goal from Mario Puskarich '17.

The college game is growing in every sense, and while nothing comes easy in this ultra-competitive world, Woodcroft and his staff are working around the clock — and the globe — to get his team moving up the ranks."

SIZE MATTERS
The Catamounts as a team have an average height of 6'1.6" which makes them the tallest team in college hockey. Boston University (6'0.9") is the only other team in Hockey East in the top-10. Vermont is also fourth in the NCAA in average weight at 191.0 pounds.
 
VERMONT CONNECTION SHINES AT 2022 WORLD JUNIORS
Joel Määttä became the first Catamount in program history to medal at the highest level of the World Juniors in August. He earned a silver medal with Finland, with three goals and an assist in seven games. Head Coach Todd Woodcroft earned a bronze medal as an assistant coach with Sweden. Ralfs Bergmanis (Latvia) and Luca Münzenberger (Germany) also competed at the 2022 IIHF World Juniors. Assistant Coach Scott Moser served in the same role for Slovakia as well.
 
RECORD NUMBER OF CATAMOUNTS ATTEND NHL ROOKIE CAMPS
Vermont had a program-record 11 student-athletes (committed or enrolled) participate at NHL Development Camps this summer. Joel Määttä who was selected by the Edmonton Oilers in the seventh round of the 2022 NHL Draft attended Oilers camp with his UVM teammate Luca Münzenberger. Locally Porter Schachle and Gabe Carriere were invitees to the Boston Bruins development camp.
 
DRAFT CAPITAL
The Catamounts enter the new season with six NHL Draft picks on the roster. Robbie Stucker (Columbus, 2017 7th Rd.), Andrei Buyalsky (Colorado, 2021 3rd Rd.), Luca Münzenberger (Edmonton, 2021 3rd Rd.), Isak Walther (Nashville, 2019 6th Rd.), Timofei Spitserov (San Jose, 2020 7th Rd.) and Joel Määttä (Edmonton, 2022 7th Rd.) are sure to bring added NHL attention to the program this season.
 
GUT HOCKEY GOES INTERNATIONAL
The Vermont roster is comprised of student-athletes from nine different countries. There is at least one player from Finland, Latvia, Russia, Slovakia, Sweden, Germany, Kazakhstan, Canada and the United States.
 
TRANSFORMATIONAL FACILITIES UPGRADE
This season is the Catamounts first year in their brand-new facilities in Gutterson Fieldhouse. Vermont will be using a newly built theater style video room, locker room and lounge and Athletic Medicine space this fall. UVM Athletics paired with AMI Graphics to complete the spaces.
