Vermont Skiing in Second After Day One of Williams Carnival; Brewster Notches Eighth Consecutive Podium Finish; Bakken Wins Second EISA Race of the Season

HANCOCK, MA./WOODFORD, Vt. - On Friday morning, day one of the Williams Carnival began from Jiminy Peak and Prospect Mtn. The men's and women's Nordic teams competed in the 10k FR Int. race, while the Alpine squads competed in the GS. UVM finished second overall with 414 points after the first day of competition, seeing three Nordic skiers on the podium. Peter Bakken (first) and Ruben Kretzschmar (second) placed for the men, and Haley Brewster (second) for the women. Dartmouth currently sits in first place after day one with 452 points.

The men's Nordic team kicked off day one by placing first in the 10k FR Int. race with 130 points and six skiers placing in the top 20 of finishers. Bakken placed first with a run time of 24:43.0 and earned 50 EISA points. This is Bakken's fourth podium finish of the season and second EISA victory. Following behind was Kretzschmar, who placed second with a run time of 24:52.7 and receiving 47 EISA points, his third podium appearance of the season and second consecutive. Luke Rizio was the third Vermont finished, placing eighth with a run time of 25:34.1, and earning 33 EISA points to help lift his team.
 
The women's Nordic team placed second in the 10k FR Int. race with 114 points with five skiers in the top 20 of finishers. Brewster placed second with a run time of 27:47.4, earning 47 EISA points for her team. This was Brewster's eighth podium finish in a row. Greta Kilburn was the next Vermont finisher, in fifth place, with a run time of 28:29.9 and 39 points, a season best finish for Kilburn. Lena Poduska placed 12th with a run time of 29:31.7 and 28 EISA points.
 
On the Alpine slopes, the men's team finished day one in fourth place with 75 points in the GS. Gray Flanagan was Vermont's best finisher, coming in fifth with a two-run time of 1:32.35 and earning 38 EISA points, his second top five finish of the season. Felix Lindemayer came in 23rd with a two-run time of 1:33.63 and received 19 EISA points for the team. Oskar Gillberg followed close behind, in 24th, with a two-run time of 1:33.76 and 18 points.
 
The women's Alpine squad also finished fourth with 95 points on day one with three skiers placing in the top 20 of finishers. Cydnie Timmerman was Vermont's best finisher in sixth with a two-run time of 1:35.53 and 36 EISA points. Sara Stiel placed ninth with a two-run time of ??1:36.10 and 31 EISA points, her fourth top ten finish of the season. Linn Liedholm finished 13th with a two-run time of 1:36.43 and earned 28 points for her team, tying her season best finish.
 
NEXT UP
The Catamounts will be back in action tomorrow for day two of the Williams Carnival from Jiminy Peak and Prospect Mtn. Saturday's events will include the 3x5 CL Relay for Nordic set to begin with the men at 10 a.m. followed by the women at 11:30 a.m., and the Slalom for Alpine with men first runs slated for 9 a.m. followed by the women's first runs at 10 a.m. (All times subject to change).
