One of the greatest competitors ever to wear the Green and Gold. Dr. Edward Winant, a 1971 UVM Hall of Fame inductee and former standout quarterback for the Catamount football team, went on to become one of the most celebrated orthopedic surgeons in the country.

One of the top honors bestowed upon Dr. Winant was when Sports Illustrated, one of the top sports magazines in the country, selected the athlete-scholar to its Silver Anniversary All-American team in 1956, which honored former college football players for distinguished professional attainment. He was one of the few collegiate athletes in the United States to receive this prestigious award.

He's a wonderful man who was a pleasure to watch and coach on the athletic field; no award could be too good for him," said former UVM baseball great (and coach), Larry Gardner, one of the seven original inductees into Vermont's Athletic Hall of Fame in 1969.

Echoing Gardner's praises, former UVM cross country and track coach, Archie Post, said, "Winant had a great spirit with a never-say-die attitude."

While at Vermont, the former mighty-mite quarterback also played three years of varsity basketball and baseball.

The popular athlete also was a member of Key and Serpent, and while attending Vermont's Medical School, he coached freshman football. Dr. Winant has been a key figure in the continued growth of the University's College of Medicine, having served as the National Chairman for the Medical Alumni Fund Drive for many years.
