William C. Howard 1952 - Baseball, Football, Track and Field

The story of Bill Howard's involvement with the University of Vermont's athletics could be described in one word -- versatility.

A 1978 UVM Hall of Fame inductee -- called UVM's "greatest sprinter" by a former Vermont track coach, the legendary Archie T. Post -- Howard was the 1950 New England Indoor 50-yard dash champion and won the 100 and 220-yard state sprint titles in 1950 and 1951. His UVM record in the 100-yard dash (9.7) remains to this day, while his record in the 220-yard run (21.8) stood until the spring of 1977, a period of 25 years, when it was broken by Bernard Gagnon, currently a senior at Vermont and co-captain of the current team, in a time of 21.7. Howard was the Yankee Conference 100-yard dash champion in 1951, and was also known as an excellent long-jumper.

A starter in football for two seasons (1950 and 1951), he was one of the niftiest runners ever to don the Green and Gold. In addition to football, Howard was a reserve infielder on the baseball team.
