Stewart B. "Bart" Farley 1980 - Soccer, Track and Field

Bart Farley, a 1990 Athletic Hall of Fame inductee, was the first of three UVM men's soccer goalies to earn All-American honors and set several school goalkeeping records.

The school's record holder for fewest goals allowed in one season (seven in 1979), Farley also set UVM records for shutouts in a season (7) and career (15) and held them for ten-plus seasons until fellow Hall of Famer, Jim St. Andre '90, broke them. Farley also established school records for the lowest goals against average in a season (0.70) and career (0.87). He allowed only 41 goals in 47 varsity games during his four-year career at Vermont.

A native of Hinesburg, Vt., Farley was named to the NSCAA All-American First-Team in 1978 after compiling a 1.00 goals against average, four shutouts and averaging 14 saves a game. He earned All-Yankee Conference first-team honors for three seasons and was twice an All-New England selectee. A left-footed kicker with a booming leg, Farley was an outstanding distributor of the ball.

In addition to soccer, he was a sprinter on the indoor track and field team, competing in the 50 and 300-yeard sprints and the long and high jumps.

After his collegiate career at UVM, Farley played professionally in the Major Indoor Soccer League, the North American Soccer League, the American Soccer League and with Chesterfield of Great Britain's Third Division. Farley was also head men's soccer coach at Champlain College from 1983-85.  He has also been very active in various youth athletic programs in the area. He has worked as an assistant coordinator for Vermont Special Olympics and with the Sports and Recreation department at Pine Ridge School. He has also served as a goalkeeping coach at many soccer camps and clinics throughout the country.

Sports Illustrated selected Farley as one of the Top 50 Vermont athletes of the 20th Century. The magazine's editors composed a list of the "Top 50 Athletes" in each state in its December 27, 1999 issue to commemorate the millennium. Farley ranked 44th among the Top 50 Vermonters.
