University of Vermont Athletic Hall of Fame
Charles H. Isles, Jr. 1960 - Baseball, Basketall
Considered one of the top athletes in the late 50s, Charlie Isles, a 1976 UVM Hall of Fame inductee, captained both the basketball and baseball teams at UVM.
His versatility was evident on the basketball court, being named to the first team All-Yankee Conference team as a guard in 1960 and participating in the New England All-Star game that spring. His basketball ability was proven early, as he was selected the MVP of the 1958 Saint Michael's College Tournament.
Despite his obvious talents in basketball, he was probably a better baseball player, signing with the Minnesota Twins system upon graduation in 1960. He was a three-year starter at shortstop for Ralph Lapointe's successful teams in the late 50's rolling up over 40 wins in the three seasons. The slick-fielder had a .908 fielding percentage during his varsity career and was one of the leading hitters averaging close to .300 in his career.
The late Ralph Lapointe, UVM baseball coach during his collegiate days, once said of Isles: "Probably one of the finest athletes ever to play at Vermont. He did everything you asked. One of the finest baseball players I ever coached."
Isles was presented the Semans Trophy in 1960, given annually to the senior athlete who displays leadership, loyalty and service to the University. He also served as president of the UVM Varsity Club during his senior year.
