Drew Hirshfeld 1989 - Track and Field

A three-time Eastern champion in the triple jump and the winner of the Sunderland Award for character, leadership and persistence in overcoming obstacles, Drew Hirshfeld, inducted into the UVM Hall of Fame in 2004, helped the men's track and field team to the Eastern Championship in 1989.

"Drew Hirshfeld and Dan Bokan '90 legitimized our men's track and field program", former head track and field coach Ed Kusiak said, "One of the finest athletes I have ever coached, Drew was the heart and soul of the track and field program in the late 1980's".

A two-time captain of the team, Hirshfeld won the Eastern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (EIAA) triple jump crown in 1987, 1988 and 1989, and also won the long jump title in 1988. That year, not surprisingly, he was named the Most Outstanding Performer at the meet. Hirshfeld recored UVM's all-time best triple jumps, both indoors (48-10) and outdoors (48-8-3/4).

In 1989, Hirshfeld won the triple jump at the EIAA Championships, helping the Catamounts to the team title at Post Field. That same day, the UVM women's track and field team won the New England Championships at Colby College. "That was one of the finest days in UVM track and field history", Kusiak said, "and Drew Hirshfeld was a big part of it".

Hirshfeld received a degree in mechanical engineering from UVM in 1989, and was a member of Tau Beta Pi, the Engineering Honor Society. He went on to get his J.D. from Western New England College School of Law in 1993.
