University of Vermont Athletic Hall of Fame
John L. Beckley 1934 - Baseball, Basketball, Football
Like so many of the Vermont athletes admitted into the Athletic Hall of Fame the past two years, John Beckley, inducted in 1971, was a top scholar, as well as a fine athlete. Elected to the Vermont Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa his senior year (1934), Beckley went on to the Harvard School of Business Administration where he received his master's degree in 1936.
During his undergraduate days at Vermont, he captained basketball and baseball, as well as playing varsity football. In addition, he served as Class Treasurer and was a member of Delta Psi fraternity.
At the UVM Lettermen's Dinner his senior year, Beckley was awarded the standard of academic scholarship and athletic attainment. Beckley received another award from the Lettermen's Club of Vermont in 1964, when he was the recipient of the "Letter in Life" award, presented to an alumnus who has distinguished himself in athletics while at the University, and who has devoted himself to UVM and has had superior accomplishments in life.
The former Vermont athlete has served his alma mater in many ways, such as his tenure as President of the University's Board of Trustees, 1966-70.
