Charles "Chuck" Davis 1972 - Soccer, Tennis
A two-sport standout, Chuck Davis was one of the top men's tennis players in the Yankee Conference for two years and won the singles title in 1972. Also an accomplished soccer player, Davis, a 2001 UVM Hall of Fame inductee, was an All-Yankee Conference selection in 1971 after the Catamounts went a then-school best 10-2-0 to earn a share of the conference title. That season he also was the co-winner of the team's Hal Greig Award, named after the UVM Hall of Fame coach and given to the player who through his desire, hustle and and love of the game, has done to most for the Vermont soccer program.
A captain of the tennis team in 1972, Davis played #1 singles in every match of 1971 and 1972. He was runner-up in the Yankee Conference singles tournament in 1971 before winning in 1972. A transfer from Middlebury College, Davis was "one of the best tennis players that I had the privilege of coaching during my tenure at UVM," according to Greig. "He worked extremely hard on his game, was the captain of the team and showed great leadership qualities. He was like an assistant coach. He had an excellent record against some the Yankee Conference's top players. In his senior year, he won the singles championship, defeating the top seed from UMass in straight sets. Chuck had developed a plan as to how he would defeat his opponent, and he executed that plan perfectly."
After graduation, Davis has been active in youth sports. He was a coach of the Champlain Valley Union High School boys' soccer team in 1972 that included future Catamounts like Bart Farley, Jon Koerner and Chuck Ross. He also ran in three marathons, with this best time being a very competitive 2 hours and 56 minutes.
