John J. Spasyk 1942 - Baseball, Football, Track and Field
Not only was John J. Spasyk one of the top athletes ever to play at the University of Vermont - he was one of the most respected. A 1972 UVM Hall of Fame inductee, Sapsyk won letters in football, track and baseball for three years, 1939-42.
"John Spasyk made one of the biggest contributions to the track team of any athlete I ever coached at Vermont," says Archie Post, retired UVM track coach and recent (1970) inductee into the UVM Athletic Hall of Fame.
Again, like so many of the inductees into the Athletic Hall of Fame, Spasyk also distinguished himself off the playing fields. While at Vermont, he was a member of Gold Key, Key and Serpent, the Boulder Society and Kappa, an academic honorary. Also, Spasyk was listed in Who's Who in College and was elected to Sigma Delta Psi, the national athletic honor society, for two consecutive years.
He was named to the All-State team in football and baseball for all three years he competed and he served as the captain of the UVM baseball team in 1942.
Upon graduation, he was awarded the Sunderland Trophy, presented to the senior who "throughout his college course has best exemplified those qualities of character, leadership and persistence on overcoming obstacles."
