Tor Melander 1982 - Skiing
A four-time All-American in Alpine skiing, Tor Melander twice won the individual NCAA Championship in the giant slalom. Inducted into the UVM Hall of Fame in 1994, he captured the 1981 title in Park City, Utah and the 1983 crown in Bozeman, Montana.
In addition to being a brilliant skier, Melander also excelled in the classroom. As a senior, he was awarded the Wasson Athletic Prize, presented to the senior athletes who have maintained the highest level of academic scholarship and athletic achievement.
A native of Taby, Sweden, his NCAA alpine accomplishments are unequalled at Vermont scoring points at the national meet in each of his four seasons. In 1980, he was sixth in the giant slalom. In 1981, he won the GS and was seventh in the slalom. In 1982, he was fifth in the GS and sixth in the slalom. And in 1983, he was first in the giant slalom and 14th in the slalom. Melander was the second-ever Catamount male skier to be a four-time All-American following Hall of Famer Scott Light '80. A teammate who anchored the Nordic team, Hall of Famer Pal Sjulstad '84, also turned the trick.
