Hammond Livingston 1949 - Basketball, Tennis

Known more for his efforts on the tennis team, Hammy Livingston, a 1989 UVM Hall of Fame inductee, was a two-sport standout - and captain - for the Catamounts in the 1940s.

In tennis, he formed what the late UVM tennis coach, Fred D. Carpenter (a UVM Athletic Hall of Fame inductee in 1971) said was "the best collegiate doubles combination I ever coached - or saw at our level." Livingston and doubles partner, Bob Jake, were undefeated in 1949 (9-0) and won the New England Championships.

Although Livingston was an outstanding tennis player, he was captain and a starting guard for the outstanding basketball team of the late 40's. Playing along side Hall of Famer Larry Killick and Jake on the basketball court, Vermont was 63-21 from 1945-49.

But, it is tennis that has enraptured this outstanding athlete. He went on to become a successful tennis professional in Delray Beach Club, Fla. A professional and a teacher-coach for 24 years prior to moving to Delray Beach, he has been ranked No. 1 in Florida over eight times in various age groups. He also shined in several regional and national tournaments and reached the semifinals of the National 60's Tournament at Little Rock, Ark. in 1987.

An outstanding student-athlete at UVM, Livingston was awarded the Wasson Athletic Prize, given to the member of the senior class who has maintained the highest standard of academic scholarship and athletic attainment.
