George Minarsky 1971 - Baseball, Hockey

A two-sport standout in the late 60s and early 70s, George Minarsky, inducted into the UVM Hall of Fame in 1984, worked magic for the Vermont hockey and baseball teams.

A fluid scorer in hockey, he packed 56 goals and 61 assists into three seasons (freshmen could not play varsity in his era). He was a study in consistency, scoring 24 goals and 13 assists as a sophomore, 18 and 24 as a junior, and 14 and 24 as a senior. He led the Catamounts in scoring and goals as a sophomore and a junior, and was second in scoring to Patty Wright his senior year. At the time of his graduation, he was first on the UVM career scoring list. He set five scoring records in his career: career points (117), assists in a single-game (five), points in a single-game (seven), goals in a season (24) while tying for the single-game record of four goals in one game.

He was equally adept on the baseball field performing as a three-year starter in centerfield and at second base. In 1969, just a sophomore, Minarsky hit .307, stole 22 bases in 22 games, and was named to the ECAC Division I All-Star third team. He was perfect on defense, playing the entire year in centerfield without making an error. As a junior in 1970, he maintained the hot bat, hitting .294, and led Vermont in runs, hits, and stolen bases. In his senior season, Minarsky's batting average dipped to .250, but the speedster led the team in stolen bases, and was chosen as an Academic All-American at second base. He is a top-five member in five UVM offensive categories and has records for steals in a season (22) and a career (49).

An investment portfolio manager, he lives in Toronto with his wife, Beth, and their son, Bryan.
