Dr. Richard W. Amidon Special Inductee - Team Physician
A familiar face on the sidelines at UVM events and at the side of UVM athletes for many years, Dr. Richard Amidon served as the university's Director of Student Health Services for over 30 years. Amidon, a 1983 Hall of Fame inductee, earned a bachelor's degree from UVM in 1941, and his M.D. here in 1943. He did postgraduate work in medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.
Amidon received a NIH cardiology traineeship grant and returned to UVM as an instructor and assistant professor of clinical medicine. Named the first director of the university student health center in 1949, he has devoted nearly all of his professional life to the University of Vermont and the state of Vermont. During his stewardship he incorporated for student care a vast increase in medical knowledge, diagnostic techniques and treatment, while providing quality service to a student clientele that grew fourfold.
He was instrumental in developing one of the finest athletic training staffs and facilities anywhere, as the athletic program at UVM expanded during his tenure from eight varsity teams to 26, with over 600 student athletes. Amidon's commitment to UVM athletics cuts across many lines. They include his participation as an active member of the Hall of Fame Committee, and his loyal support as a charter member of the old Centennial Club and the Catamount Club.
"Doc's dedicated service to the student athletes has been a work of love and devotion. Many of us owe him a great debt of gratitude," said UVM director of Athletics Denis Lambert. Amidon worked with students to establish the UVM Rescue Squad.
He retired in 1982 as the University's director of student health services.
