Howard A. Prentice 1928 - Baseball, Basketball, Track and Field
Howard Prentice, a 1971 UVM Hall of Fame inductee, was a former athlete, scholar, coach and athletic director at the University of Vermont who went on to become one of the top educators and business executives in the United States. Now retired, Prentice served as executive vice president of Proprietary Association, and one serving manufacturers of drugs and medicines in the United States.
An All-New England basketball player at Vermont from 1926-28, Prentice was also a classy first baseman for the Catamount baseball team and top long jump specialist for the track team.
Following his undergraduate days, he accepted the post of Director of Athletics and head of physical education at Vermont and served in the capacity from 1928-45. In addition, he coached the varsity basketball team from 1930-31 and the freshman baseball team from 1936-37.
Prentice received his doctorate in education from Columbia in 1940. The former Vermont athletic director was a past president of the American Society of Association Executives and was the co-founder of Chartered Association of Executives of ASAE. Prentice was a University of Vermont Trustee from 1952-58.
