Norman K. Strassburg 1941 - Football
A 1980 Hall of Fame inductee who is known as one of the most respected athletic administrators at UVM over the last 30 years, Norman Strassburg was also an outstanding athlete for the Catamounts most notably as a four-year starting guard in football, 1937-40.
Known by most as director of UVM's intramural program and a member of the physical education faculty until his retirement in 1980, Strassburg as an undergraduate was an All-State selection for three years and later was an assistant coach for the football, basketball and track teams from 1946-63.
Also as an undergraduate, he was a member of Delta Psi Fraternity and Boulder Society. He participated in interfraternity athletics and was a member of the Kake Walk Committee for two years. Strassburg received his M. Ed. Degree from UVM in 1951 and was an assistant professor of physical education before taking over his duties as director of UVM's intramural program in 1953.
His son, David, was the captain of the Vermont basketball team in 1963-64.
Strassburg spent three-plus years in the U.S. Coast Guard immediately after graduating from UVM in 1941. He was a petty officer first class in the North Atlantic and Mediterranean areas. The popular teacher taught physical education at Richford (Vt.) High School and North Tonawanda (N.Y.) High in his hometown prior to accepting a position at UVM as a physical education instructor in 1946. He also served several terms as a member of the UVM Athletic Hall of Fame Administrative Committee.
