Donald W. Maley 1941 - Baseball, Basketball, Football

One of the top high school coaches in Vermont and New England for over 30 years, Don Maley, a 1977 UVM Hall of Fame inductee, was also a fine three-sport star at Vermont.

Perhaps basketball was his best sport, lettering for three seasons, and starting all three years. He was named to the All-State team for two years, 1939-40 and 1940-41. In addition to basketball, Don was a starter in both football and baseball.

But, it was his work after graduation that made him so well known and respected by so many athletes and followers of Vermont high school athletics. A high school basketball coach for 32 years, he compiled the most wins ever by a Vermont mentor, 438. This included 17 League Championships and a team (1955) that made it to the New Englands and performed well.

Maley started his high school coaching career at Woodstock High in 1942 and ended up at South Burlington (VT), retiring in 1972. Most of his coaching career was spent at Cathedral in Burlington (1942-52). In addition to coaching basketball, Maley had two Northern League championships in baseball, one at Cathedral and one at Burlington High School. He also coached football for several seasons.

On top of all that, Maley was a respected high school official for 26 years. Before retiring from teaching at South Burlington, where he was the chairman of the social studies department for many years, Maley was honored in 1974 as a recipient of the Ralph A. Lapointe Award, presented annually by the Vermont Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.
