Ray W. Allen 1983 - Cross Country, Track and Field
A cross country and track star as an undergraduate, Ray Allen is a UVM alumnus who has done it all for his university, and in 1983, he was rewarded with induction in the Athletic Hall of Fame.
As captain of Vermont's 1958 cross country team, he led the Catamounts to an undefeated campaign, including the New England and Yankee Conference championships.
Also a miler, two-miler and pole vaulter for the indoor and outdoor track squads, Allen was the 1959 recipient of the Russell O. Sunderland Memorial Trophy, given to the senior athlete who has best exemplified the qualities of character, leadership and persistence in overcoming obstacles.
Two decades later, in 1981, Allen received the UVM Alumni Council's Distinguished Service Award. He has served many years on the council's College of Agriculture Advisory Committee.
Allen was the first non-faculty member to be elected chairman of UVM's Alumni Council.
In addition, Allen has served on the Athletic Hall of Fame Committee, and the 1973 search committee for a head basketball coach.
The university's men's cross country team has honored him by naming its annual Most Valuable Runner and Most Improved Runner awards after him.
Allen has a distinguished record of service in his community. He has served as town auditor, justice of the peace, and member of the school board. He has been chief of the rescue squad since its inception in 1973.
Still a fine runner who has completed 14 marathons, Allen is the owner of Allenholm Farm in South Hero, Vt., where he resides with his wife Judy.
