Donald K. Mayland 1967 - Football, Swimming, Track and Field
Don Mayland (UVM Hall of Fame - induction class of 1982), a longtime track and swim coach and teacher of economics at the Hotchkiss School, Lakeville, Conn., was considered by many UVM coaches in the 1960s to be one the university's finest all-around athletes during this era.
A four-year star in track, Mayland was twice the New England Champion in the pole vault - in 1963 and 1964 - and won the Yankee Conference title in 1965. His leap of 14-4 in 1964 still stands as the UVM record in this event. Mayland also set UVM records in the 55-yard low hurdles and the 50-yard dash. He captained the track squad as a senior in 1967 and was the recipient of the Russell O. Sunderland Trophy, presented to the senior who "best exhibits the reaits of character, leadership and persistence in overcoming an obstacle.
In addition to his track and field accomplishments, Mayland played on the UVM football team in 1963, and swam for the AquaCats in 1963-64.
Mayland served three years of active duty in the Naval Reserve (1967-70), and received his master's degree from American International College in 1973.
