Edward D. Yeates 1972 - Hockey

A 1982 UVM Hall of Fame inductee and a two-time All-American, Ted Yeates finished his three-year career in 1972 as one of the greatest defensemen in Vermont hockey history. Yeates, a three-time letterwinner, earned All-American and All-East honors as a junior and senior.

After serving as a co-captain with Dave Reece as a junior, he was the team captain in his final year. Also in 1972, he became the first defenseman to be selected as the Vermont's John C. Cunningham Most Valuable Player. With 21 goals and 58 assists in 69 games, Yeates finished his career as the leading scorer among UVM blueliners. His 79 points place him in the top 50 on the Vermont career-scoring list.

Yeates' teams compiled the outstanding three-season record of 45-24-2, for a winning percentage of .658. During his time UVM had an even more successful mark, 41-11-1 (.774) against ECAC Division II competition.

In 1969-70, Yeates' sophomore year, UVM captured the Division II championship and Yeates was a key contributor on the blue line.

He scored 13 goals as a senior to set a record for most goals by a defenseman in a season, a record that still stands over 30 years later. He also tallied five points in a win over UConn in 1972 to tie a school single-game record for points by a blueliner.

Ted was the second of the three Yeates brothers who played hockey at UVM over a 10-year period: Jim '70, Ted '72 and Ken '76.

Yeates also played on the club rugby team for two years, and participated in intramural competition in several sports.

After graduation Yeates went on to play and coach hockey professionally in Europe for seven years, two in Sweden and five in Italy. He has returned to Vermont where he has been active in youth sports.
